Location: Wilmington, NC
Duration: 18 Months
Hourly Rate: $62 (W2), $77 (1099)
Role & Responsibilities:
- The Mechanical Design Engineer will support the Advanced Design & Development team within Advanced Applications Engineering. The AD&D team supports the development of advanced nuclear applications through technical leadership on early phase projects and delivering high caliber analysis of complex, first-of-a-kind technologies. AD&D is an interdisciplinary group of problem-solvers with high aptitude and flexibility.
- The applicant should be a self-starting professional that can operate with minimal supervision and take a lead role in the design of mechanical systems.
- Apply mechanical design principles as needed to create innovative, first of a kind equipment designs in compliance with internal procedures and all applicable requirements
- Create high quality designs that can be feasibly and affordably manufactured, assembled, and serviced.
- Manage interfaces and engage with customers for design reviews and verification activities.
- Produce models, perform calculations, plan analyses, and perform verifications for advanced reactor components.
- Develop drawings and specifications to assure products can reliably meet all engineering and quality requirements.
- Collaborate with technical leadership and lead work scopes by delegating and providing mentorship to junior engineers.
- Facilitate effective handoffs with systems engineering, mechanical analysis, and other disciplines as required to meet project deadlines.
Additional Skills
- Significant experience designing large scale equipment including pressure vessels, waste packaging units, and lifting/handling devices.
- Knowledge of applicable ASME and AWS codes.
- Understanding of maintenance or fuel handling equipment used in commercial or naval reactors.
- Demonstrated ability to perform while challenged by multiple demands and changing priorities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including customer interface experience.
- Experience with design, evaluation, and operation of nuclear power plant components, primarily NPP systems.
- Strong grasp of mechanical properties of conventional and high temperature materials in and our of a radioactive environment.
- Advanced degree or strong background in engineering mechanicals with skills in stress analysis.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience with specialization in mechanical design.
- Mastery of a computer-aided drafting (CAD) tool such as AutoCAD Inventor.
- Understanding of fundamental mechanical design principles, ability to perform simple stress verification calculations, and exposure to mechanical analysis tools such as ANSYS Mechanical.
